If you remember !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . But she finally came around with a compromise. I’m allowed to purchase a new motorcycle as long as I pay it straight up and spend no more than $5K.

I found a gently used 2013 XR650L with 1,600 kms that was bought new last year for $5,000 cad($3,830 usd). Since I’ll be making a $1000 profit on my bike this means it’s $4,000 cad($3,065 usd) out of my pocket. Keep in mind a new 2016 XR650L has an MSRP of $8,149 and once you factor in freight,PDI and taxes you are looking at just under $9,000 out the door. Which means that this bike is a total steal.

As a bonus the bike also has an aftermarket Acerbis 5.8 gal tank as well as the original punny 2 gal tank. The larger gas tank was going to be one of my first mods so this saves me another ~$350 bucks.

Picture off the interwebz for reference only.

I have yet again a serious buyer lined up for my bike and if things go as planned I’ll have a new bike by this weekend.

A freaking +

I’d have an XRL in the garage over a KLR any day. Congrats!

That’s the best way to do it, congrats! I generally drop hints about a new vehicle, and my fiancee gently bats them away as if I’m kidding. If I talk about it too much she get’s mean about it.

Finally I show up in the driveway with vehicle x, she’ll give me the “no you didn’t look.” and I’ll calmly say “You know what you signed up for.” She will reluctantly agree and on we go with life.

At least bikes are cheaper than cars.

Next step, replace that boat anchor stock exhaust and get the carb jetted by someone that knows what he’s doing.

I prefer the wind protection of the KLR and being liquid cooled is nice too. But the XRL being almost 90lbs lighter and the fact that it’s a Honda makes it A OK in my book.

I still sort of want the KLR but this will suffice.

Funny, I’m the opposite, I’d way rather have air/oil cooled in a bike like this. There is less to fail and it has been proven reliable.

I guess it all depends on usage, the KLR is a better road biased adventure bike the XR is a better dirt biased adventure bike.

I’ve been doing lots of research today on exactly that. Apparently the bike is super restricted in stock form and WAY lean. Have you ever hear of Dave’s Mod for the XR650L? you essentially drill out the holes in the slide to 5/32" to make the slide a bit quicker and a #4 stainless washer to space out the needle to richen the mixture. This is apparently a MUST DO upgrade for any XLR owner. And for my current elevation I’m thinking a 55 pilot jet and a 158 main jet would be just about perfect.(stock is 50 & 152)

Apparently this combo makes a substantial power increase that is night and day different than stock.

The Honda will be for sure the most durable of the two and the easiest to work on. I already have a shit load of plans for it and I don’t even have it yet.

Very cool! I love those bikes.

I just found a basket case a 87 XL 600R I’m hoping to snag tomorrow. My plans for a street legal trike are coming together.

I’ve heard of it. You really need to do it if you want to make power with an XR, they’re more restricted than a Corvette GTE car from the factory. I’m surprised the original owner left it stock to be honest.

This was a reply to another comment. DAve’s mod is an absolute MUST!

It’s good for over 250 miles! way better than the 90ish mile range of the stocker.

Yup, and the notion of being “allowed” to do something rubs me the wrong way. I’m not a little kid that needs permission to buy a vehicle.
